1892-1963Nacido en Nueva York, estudia en Yale, es ayudante de editor de “Vanity Fair” y director publicitario del Ballet Ruso, antes de que Walter Wanger lo introduzca en el cine, en la productora de Jesse L. Lasky. Director desde comienzos de los anos 20, realiza con exito la transicion del mudo al sonoro. Sera re cordado por algunas de sus realizaciones dentro del genero ne gro, como La llave de cristal (The Glass Key, 1935), precursora del citado genero, o El cuervo (This Gun for Hire, 1942), Suspense (1946) y A Cry in the Night (1956), todas mo delicas. Aunque en general es un director digno de mejor recuerdo del que hoy le acompana, su aportacion al western se reduce a una muestra del primitivo western sonoro, balbuceante y poco dinamico.Dude Ranch. 1931. 71 minutos.
